UIAM (Institute of Applied Informatics, Automation and Mathematics) was established on 1st January 2007 based on the decision of the Academic Senate of MTF STU dated on 20th december 2006. The UIAM was formed by joining two departments:
Department of Applied Informatics and Automation
was originally established under the name of the Department of Automated Systems for Control of Production Processes in Mechanical Engineering when the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Technology of the Slovak Technical University was founded in 1986. Assoc. Prof. Ing. Dušan Dobrovodský, PhD. was the first head of the department. The department was focused on training students for the needs of production systems and processes automation and control. It provided a five-year master’s study „Automated Control Systems in Mechanical Engineering“, later transformed to „Mechanical Engineering Applied Informatics“. In 1989, a part of the Department of Mechanisation, Automation and Robotisation of Technological Processes was allocated to the department and the new institution was renamed into the Department of Automated Production Systems in Mechanical Engineering. In 1991, the department was divided again, a new Department of Automated Production Systems was established and the original one was renamed into the Department of Applied Informatics in Mechanical Engineering. In 1993, both departments were merged under the name of the Department of Applied Informatics and Automation.

Department of Mathematics
was established as the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Descriptive Geometry as a part of the newly founded Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Technology of the Slovak Technical University in Trnava in 1986. The Department of Mathematics and Descriptive Geometry was gradually formed with the arrival of young graduates, primarily from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the Comenius University in Bratislava. In 1990, the Department of Mathematics with teachers of mathematics and geometry separated from the former Department of Mathematics, Physics and Descriptive Geometry. Professional scientific and educational activities of the department were particularly linked to the tradition of prof. Š. Schwarz, a mathematician, and prof. V. Medek, a geometer, prominent personalities working at the Slovak Technical University.
