During the 20th anniversary of the formation the Slovak Republic, the President of the Slovak Republic (SR) - Ivan Gašparovič granted state awards to important personalities of the SR. The ceremonial act took place in Bratislava- Redoute, during the nationwide celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Slovak Republic’s formation. Those present were the Chairman of the National Board of the SR - Pavol Paska, the Prime Minister of SR - Robert Fico, parliamentarians, representatives of government, representatives of the civil service and self governments, diplomats, representatives of churches, culture, community and other distinguished guests.
Ivan Gašparovič’s speech congratulated the awarded people due to their well-deserved recognition, which the Slovak Republic expresses by granting the highest state award.
We are pleased to announce to all employees that among the awarded personalities their was also Miroslav Urban, an employee of the Institute of Materials of the MTF STU, who received the second grade of the Order of Ludovit Stur for his special achievements in the field of theoretical chemistry and the development of University education in SR.
Prof. RNDr. Miroslav Urban, DrSc., the holder of several major awards (State Award for scientific work in theoretical chemistry, Crystal Wing, Comenius University Gold Medal, and the title of - Personality of science and technology and alike.), has gained the most important results in theoretical and computational chemistry and also the development of methods and quantum chemistry computer programs. He was instrumental in the introduction of ab-initio methods in quantum chemistry and participated in the creation of a computer program called Comenius. He also contributed to the development of the coupled cluster method for molecules with a closed and open electronic structure.
Prof. RNDr. Miroslav Urban, DrSc. also contributed to the development of the first Accreditation Committee, which is an advisory body to the Government. As its first Chairman, he was involved in the creation of algorithms for evaluating educational and scientific work of universities and he tried for international acceptance of the Accreditation Commission of the SR’s Ministry of Education.
Since 2009, he has been an employee of the MTF STU, where, in addition to its rich research activity he is devoted to the teaching of general chemistry.
