Institute of Industrial Engineering and Management was established on 1 January 2008 as the “successor” of the renowned history of the managerial and economic education at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. Its origin dates back to 1st September 1952, when the “Department of Machine Industry” was founded at the Faculty of Economic Engineering within the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava. The founder and the first head of the department was Assoc. Prof., Eng. Ladislav Pavelka, who laid the foundations of the Department's educational orientation.
In 1957, the “Institute of Economics and Management of Mechanical Production” started its activity as a research workplace of the Department. Department collaborated cooperation with leading engineering plants in Slovakia and tackle tasks in the work organization, a comprehensive rationalization and mathematical methods using in management.
In the academic year 1960/1961, the Faculty of Economical Engineering was closed and the Department was included into the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering as the “Department of Mechanical and Electrotechnical Production Management”. At that time it was the only “directional” department for a study field “Economics and Management of Mechanical Engineering”, and Prof. Eng. Jozef Marko took charge of the head. In 1974, Prof., Eng. Alexander Linczényi, Ph.D. became the head of the Department.
In 1986, the Department became a part of the newly established Faculty of Machine Technology STU in Trnava and was renamed as the “Department of Machine Production Management”. Innovating the contents of the major subjects within the study majors (operating management, information systems and care of product quality in particular), it quickly got adapted to the new social conditions.
The academic year 1989/1990 was characterized by further innovations in the field of study regarding the entrepreneurial activities of corporations and the new managerial approaches.
In academic year 1991/1992, the Department went through further changes: it was renamed as the “Department of Industrial Engineering” with Assoc. Prof., Eng. Eva Doubková, Ph.D. as the head. The Department was constantly confronted with the latest global knowledge in the field of industrial production and economic scientific disciplines. These findings became to varying degrees part of the teaching in the Department, and its research activities.
In the years 1995/1996, the Department was renamed again this time as the “Department of Management and Quality”. Prof., Eng. Alexander Linczényi, Ph.D. became its head.
The Department provided two study field in the Eng. study “Management of Industrial Enterprises“ and “Engineering Production Quality“ in two study forms (full-time and part-time study). In the study field “Engineering Production Quality“ is also accredited doctoral degree. This is possible even habilitation and inauguration. Department implemented bachelor degree in the study field “Industrial Management“.
In academic year 2001/2002, the Department successfully managed the transition to the three-degree model of academic education (Bc. - Eng. – Ph.D.) and obtained the right of habilitation and inauguration in the field of “Industrial Engineering and Management”.
By 1st June 2002, the Department was divided into two parts: “Department of Industrial Engineering and Management” headed by Assoc. Prof., Eng. Miloš Čambál, Ph.D. and “Department of Production Quality” headed by Prof., Eng. Alexander Linczényi, Ph.D. Department of Industrial Engineering and Management ensured the study program “Industrial Management”, at all three degrees of higher education (Bc. - Eng. – Ph.D.) in both study forms (full-time and part-time study). Department has been accredited for the habilitation and inauguration in the field of “Industrial Engineering and Management”. Department of Engineering ensured the study program quality “Production Quality” for undergraduate higher education degree and “Engineering Production Quality” on the engineering and doctorate degrees in higher education both study forms (full-time and part-time study). Department has been accredited for the habilitation and inauguration in this field.
On 1st January 2008, the "IIEMQ” consisting of the “Department of Management”, “Department of Industrial Engineering” and “Department of Quality Engineering“ was established. Assoc. Prof., Eng. Miloš Čambál, Ph.D. was appointed the director. The Institute obtained an accreditation of study programmes in all degrees of the academic education.
In 2010, departments were cancelled due to changes in the organizational structure of the Institute of Industrial Engineering, Management and Quality.
In 2013 the IIEMQ was renamed as the Institute of Industrial Engineering and Management (hereinafter “IIEM”).
