About EPTL
The Explosion Prevention Testing Laboratory (EPTL) operates at the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, based in Trnava. The laboratory specializes in testing and evaluating the properties of industrial dusts with regard to their explosion hazards.
The laboratory is equipped with specialized and technical equipment for testing the explosion characteristics of industrial dusts. SLPVP is an accredited testing laboratory in accordance with the STN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard.

Accredited Tests
EPTL MTF focuses on testing and evaluating various parameters of the fire properties of combustible dusts.
- Determination of Particle Size Distribution (Sieve method – Standard STN EN 933-1): Determination of the mass fractions of particle-size fractions in a dust sample and its median particle size.
- Determination of Dust Moisture Content (Standard STN EN ISO 21660-3): Determination of the moisture content of a dust sample under specified drying conditions.
- Determination of Bulk Density (Tap density – Standard STN EN/ISO 23145-1): Determination of the bulk density of a dust sample after tapping.
- Dust Flammability Testing (Standard STN EN/ISO/IEC 80079-20-2): Determination of whether the dust is flammable or non-flammable under the conditions of the specified test method.
- Determination of Dust Resistivity (Standard STN EN/ISO/IEC 80079-20-2): Determination of the electrical resistivity of a bulk dust sample.
- Determination of Explosion Characteristics of Dust Clouds (Standard STN EN 14034-1+A1, 2+A1, 3+A1): Determination of the maximum explosion pressure, maximum rate of pressure rise and lower explosion limit, subject to the applicable test methods.
- Determination of the Limiting Oxygen Concentration of Dust Clouds (Standard STN EN 14034-4+A1): etermination of the limiting oxygen concentration under the specified test conditions.
- Determination of the Minimum Ignition Energy of Dust/Air Mixtures (Standard STN EN 13821): Determination of the minimum energy required to ignite a dust–air mixture under the specified test conditions.
- Determination of the Minimum Ignition Temperature of a Dust Layer (Standard STN EN/ISO/IEC 80079-20-2): Determination of the minimum ignition temperature of a dust layer under the specified test conditions.
- Determination of the Minimum Ignition Temperature of a Dust Cloud (Standard STN EN/ISO/IEC 80079-20-2): Determination of the minimum ignition temperature of a dust cloud under the specified test conditions.

EPTL Equipment
The laboratory is equipped with the following devices, which enable comprehensive measurements and evaluations of the fire -related and explosion characteristics of combustible dusts:
- Explosion chamber KV-150M2-UIBE: A unique device with a capacity of 365-liters for simulating explosion scenarios.
- 20 L explosion chamber: A 20-liters explosion chamber designed to study the properties of dust samples.
- Modified Hartmann tube: A special tube modified for conducting studies of the properties of combustible dusts.
- Hotplate apparatus: Used to measure the minimum ignition temperature of a dust layer.
- Godbert–Greenwald furnace: Used to measure the minimum ignition temperature of a dust cloud.
- Retsch AS-200 sieve shaker with a set of sieves (20 μm – 710 μm): Used to determine the particle size distribution of dust samples through sieve analysis.
- SLW 53 SMART drying oven: A dryer suitable for monitoring the moisture content of dust samples at various temperatures and drying times.
- Retsch PM-100CM planetary ball mill: A device for adjusting the particle size of dust samples.
- 100-ml bulk density measuring device: Used to measure the bulk density of dust samples.
- Device for determining the minimum ignition energy—Hartmann tube: The OZM MIE-D 1.2 is used to measure the MIE of a suspended dust cloud.
