The 8th International Doctoral Seminar (IDS), organised by the Faculty of Materials Science and Technology with the seat in Trnava, the Slovak University of Technology, was for the first time co-organised with a foreign University, the Faculty of Organisation and Informatics, Varaždin, University of Zagreb, Croatia. The Seminar venue was the Centre for Advanced Academic Studies in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
The Seminar was organised for the PhD students who could present the results of their dissertation theses in the area of Engineering Technologies, Materials Engineering, Applied Informatics and Automation in Industry, Industrial Engineering, Management and Quality, and Environmental and Safety Engineering.
Out of 62 PhD students registered in the conference, 36 were of STU MTF, 14 of FOI Varaždin (coorganizer of IDS), two of STU FEI and 10 from abroad (Germany, Czech Republic, Spain and Russia). Simultaneously, we had an opportunity to welcome nine foreign PhD supervisors, professors and the guests from the universities and research institutes from Croatia, Germany, Spain and Poland, e.g.:

Roman Stryjski (University Zielona Gora, Poland), Assoc. Prof. Dr. inž. Julian Jakubowski (Wyzsa szkola Zawodova Suliechow, Poland).
The event was opened by Prof. Dr. Ing. Oliver Moravčík, Dean of STU MTF, and Prof. dr.sc Vjeran Strahonja, Dean of FOI, Varždin. There were two plenary talks delivered by Prof. dr. sc. Diana Šimić and Prof. Dr. Dr.h.c. Peter Joehnk.
The conference programme comprised the students’ presentations in the English language in individual professional sections chaired by associate professors and professors, mainly:

The PhD students participating in IDS 2013 have gained valuable experience in elaborating scientific presentations and particularly in presenting their scientific theses in the English language. At the same time, they could set up professional and personal contacts and compare the results of their research with the colleagues of other universities.
The poster section was prepared with aim to support the discussions within and outside the sections.
Upon the proposals of individual section chair, the Closing Ceremony was associated with awarding the best student contributions in individual sections.
The professional part of the Seminar was complemented by social events (dinner and a boat trip to the Locrum Island), which were warmly welcome by domestic and foreign participants.
Many participants promised to participate in the IDS 2014.
Based on the agreement of both Faculties’ Management (STU MTF Trnava, FOI Varaždin) and a representative of the Management of the Faculty of Informatics and Production Quality, University of Zielona Gora, Poland, the venue of the next year IDS 2014 will be the University of Zielona Gora, Poland.
